Yesterday, the Chambers and Partners 2018 rankings were released and we are delighted to have more teams and individuals recognised than any other year.

Chambers and Partners research lawyers and law firms in over 185 jurisdictions and rank the best lawyers and law firms based on several factors and considerations. Their full time researchers investigate the departments as a whole, and the individuals within those departments. Individual lawyers are ranked in their practice area based on their legal knowledge and experience, their ability, their effectiveness and their client-service.

Our Criminal Defence team were ranked Band 1 in this year’s UK Guide, along with the Personal Injury team who were also ranked Band 1.

Dave Matthews, Partner and Head of Personal Injury, was once again ranked Band 1 in his practice area. One client told Chambers and Partners during their research, “My claim was dealt with very effectively. I felt very well represented, and the compensation I received was a fair and equitable settlement.”

Other members of the Personal Injury team that were recognised for handling notable matters include Partner, Julian Monk, and Consultant, Nicola Heales.

Our ever-expanding Family and Divorce team has been ranked Band 2, with Partner and Head of Department, Jolene Hutchison, being ranked Band 3 for her “excellent knowledge” and “fast responses”.

Senior Associate, Anna Ferro, has also been recognised for her work. One client says, “Her measured approach is reassuring and professional during matters that can be emotionally charged. She often goes above and beyond when urgent matters arise.”

Other noted practice areas include Employment, Litigation and Real Estate. The Litigation team consist of a number of highly experienced and successful Commercial Litigators, including Gary Braathen and Jackie Ray. Gary Braathen handles a range of commercial disputes and has been noted for his attention to detail. One client describes Jackie Ray as “very proactive and always available”.

In the Real Estate Litigation team, Managing Partner, Jonathan Lilley, has been recognised for handling notable matters and has received recommendation for his expertise.

Rankings explained

Bands 1-6

Law firms and individual lawyers are ranked in bands from 1-6, with 1 being the best. The qualities on which rankings are assessed include technical legal ability, professional conduct, client service, commercial astuteness, diligence, commitment, and other qualities most valued by the client.

Recognised Practitioner

A ‘Recognised Practitioner’ handles notable matters and / or has received some recommendation during the course of our research.

Up-and-Coming

The ‘Up and Coming’ band lists those who do not yet have an established reputation but who are driving their firm’s growth.

Associate-to-Watch

‘Associates to Watch’ are senior associates who are recognised for their work in the background of major deals.
