All change at the top
From 1st October 2009 the House of Lords is replaced by the new Supreme Court as the highest appeal court in the UK.
The Supreme Court will hear appeals on arguable points of law of general public importance; act as the final court of appeal in civil cases for the whole of the UK; act as the final court of appeal in criminal cases for England, Wales and Northern Ireland; and assume the devolution jurisdiction of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. The Privy Council will retain its function as the final court of appeal for Commonwealth countries.
The 12-member Supreme Court will be separate from Parliament and the government and housed in the Middlesex Guild Hall in Parliament Square. All current Law Lords become the Supreme Court’s first Justices and will continue to be Members of the House of Lords, but will be unable to sit and vote in the House, ending a constitutional anomaly that has lasted centuries.
