Powers of Attorney

The legal right to appoint a friend or family member to manage your financial affairs on your behalf – known as Power of Attorney – has been established for many years. It can be a practical step to take if you are out of the country and need documentation signed in your absence, but the advantages become increasingly apparent if you become physically or mentally incapable.

Since 2007, under the Mental Capacity Act, it has been possible for your Attorney to manage your health and welfare concerns as well, such as where you should live and your medical treatment, under a Lasting Power of Attorney, should you lose the capacity to make decisions for yourself.

Drawing up a Lasting Power of Attorney allows you to retain a measure of control over future decisions taken on your behalf and helps to ensure that such decisions reflect what you would have decided yourself, had you been capable of doing so.
