The 2010-2011 statistics for the Employment Tribunal and Employment Appeals Tribunal show an 8% fall in the number of claims received when compared with the previous year.
The number of single claims have fallen by 15% and the number of multiple claims by 4%. Unfair dismissal and redundancy pay claims have fallen slightly but claims under the Part-time Workers Regulations have nearly trebled and age discrimination claims have risen by 32%.
The average compensation award for unfair dismissal was £4,591 whereas the average award for discrimination claims was between £5,000 and £6,500 (excluding age, where the average was £12,697). The highest award for unfair dismissal was £181,754. The highest award for discrimination was £289,167 (sex) compared with £729,347 (disability) in 2009-2010.
Despite the fall in the number of claims, it remains important for employers to take early action to safeguard against being the subject of potentially lengthy and costly legal actions.
