Careers / Graduates

Success starts here

Applications for 2025 will open shortly.

Applications will open shortly.

Rewarding work with great clients and all the responsibility you can take. Are you ready for the challenge?

We offer a number of training contracts every year to talented graduates wanting to go far in their careers. Our training contracts focus on your individual strengths and ambitions, encouraging you to take on as much as you can cope with, so you can go as far as you’re prepared to go. Our partners will be your mentors, many of whom started their careers with us.

Every trainee is allocated a dedicated training principal and we also operate a ‘buddy’ system, meaning that you will be fully supported. You’ll be joining a strong peer group, and our trainees regularly get together to share stories and advice.

What do we look for?

As well as an excellent academic record, sound communication skills and analytical ability, we look for talented individuals who have a strong team ethic, ambition and who embrace achievement and diversity. On average we take on 4-5 trainees each year.

How to apply

Applications will open shortly for our 2024 intake

Following the application deadline, if you are a successful candidate you will be invited to attend our assessment day. The day includes written, group and individual exercises and interviews with some of our partners. We want to give you ample opportunity to showcase your skills.

Training starts in September with a full induction day to introduce you to the firm. From day one, you are given plenty of responsibility and hands-on experience, with the ongoing support from experienced training supervisors. You can enjoy seats across our corporate services and services for individuals, gaining experience across a broad range of legal disciplines.

What is the most exciting part of being a trainee?

First off, no more training contract applications!

Being a trainee is a fantastic experience and the ability to rotate into several seats and get an insight into different areas of law has been great. I enjoy the challenge and having to apply what I learned during the LPC into practice. I’ve been fortunate that, as a trainee, I’ve been made to feel like a valued member of the team and I am regularly encouraged to be proactive and work alongside Partners to progress matters.

Outside of client work, the firm encourages trainees to take part in the community. I recently took part in the Walk for Justice and also attended a Careers Fair at a local school where I was able to share my experiences to help guide young students.

Do you get client exposure as a trainee?

Most definitely; the firm is very trusting and allow me to communicate with clients on a daily basis. From my first week as a trainee in the Residential Property department, I was meeting and communicating with clients which enabled me to build rapport and develop my communication skills. This continued on in my seat in Crime where I was asked to obtain a witness statement from a client on my first day. I am also looking forward to gaining experience in some of the firm’s commercial teams.

What do you find challenging about the role?

For me, the most challenging aspects of being a trainee have been regularly being outside your comfort zone and the 3-6 month seat cycle, which can also involve moving offices. The rotation of seats comes round just as you are starting to get to grips with that particular area of law. It is comforting to be able to share my experiences with the other trainees and to know that we’re all in the same boat. I have found that having a support network of trainees and trainee mentors is essential as you can learn from each other’s experiences.

Why did you choose Blaser Mills Law over other firms?

I joined the firm as a paralegal in the Residential Property department dealing solely with post-completion work. My first-hand experience of the friendly and positive culture made applying for the firm’s trainee programme an easy decision. Personally, I wanted to train at a firm which would provide exposure to a broad range of areas of the law, high levels of partner contact and experience of advising on complex work, all of which the firm has accommodated. The firm also promotes a healthy work life balance unlike many others and it is unusual to be leaving work past 6pm, although trainees are expected to work late when required. The firm only takes on a small number of trainees each year, which is great as it means that each trainee is afforded the time and attention to develop.

Can you give more insight into the firm’s Mentoring Scheme for trainees?

Every trainee is assigned to a mentor when they start their training contract. Mentors are typically junior associates, which means that having only recently been trainees themselves, they can empathise with our challenges. I find that the mentors provide a valuable support network and an immediate point of contact if I need to speak to someone within the firm. We typically meet with our mentors twice during each seat rotation, giving us the opportunity to discuss how work is going, as well as any other issues. Mentors are also responsible for organising trainee outing such as Christmas dinner and meet and greet drinks. The social events are great fun and certainly should not be missed!
