January 17-21 2022 marks Family Mediation Week. A campaign organised by the Family Mediation Council (FMC) to raise awareness and bring to light the benefits of family mediation and how it can support separating families manage their  separation together.

Blaser Mills Law is supporting Family Mediation week and is delighted to announce that Sarah Scriven, lawyer in the Family & Divorce team, has recently qualified as an all issues family mediator with Resolution. Partner and Head of the department, Lucinda Holliday, is an accredited mediator and is also qualified to carry out child-inclusive mediation.

Family mediation is an effective process for resolving potential disputes that may arise in divorce and separation. This will often include dealing with financial matters and child arrangements but can also include other issues that may need to be addressed.

What happens in family mediation?

Mediation can be performed in person or remotely, it brings both parties together to discuss and resolve the addressed issues. The role of the mediator is to facilitate the  discussions and help the clients explore the options available to them in a confidential environment.. The mediator is there to help clients reach decisions for the benefit of the family.

Whilst a mediator cannot provide legal advice the process is confidential and clients are encouraged to take legal advice throughout.

It is usually quicker and more cost effective than negotiating through solicitors or going through court proceedings and can help couples maintain an amicable relationship, which is particularly important where children are involved.
