James heads up both the Employment and Data Protection teams, having 20 years’ experience in both areas of law. Over his career, he has built up a wealth of experience which he uses to help businesses and individuals reach their desired objectives. He also uses his knowledge and experience to help company boards and is a non-executive director of a fast growing UK based technology business.
James’ practice covers a wide spectrum of advice and regularly advises clients on general employment and HR matters, dismissals, discrimination, settlement agreements, redundancy and employment tribunal and other litigation claims and disputes. He also helps businesses and business people with non-contentious work including the drafting of employment related agreements, including incentive arrangements, consultancy agreements, policies & procedures together with the employment aspects of restructurings and transactions, including cross-border work.
His clients are typically SMEs and entrepreneurs in the Thames Valley, where he uses his experience to help them manage risk, grow, and expand their business interests.
James helps businesses navigate data protection and e-privacy practice and legislation including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). He is an IT Governance qualified GDPR practitioner and also a qualified GDPR Data Protection Officer (DPO), a qualification that is recognised by Supervisory Authorities Europe-wide. He regularly advises businesses on GDPR compliance, data flow analysis, data protection documentation including notices, policies and data sharing/transfer arrangements, subject access requests and data breach, including reporting to and liaison with the ICO. He also acts as the DPO for clients operating in a range of sectors. His clients operate globally and including businesses in the UK, Europe, United States, Australia and New Zealand.
James is recognised as a leading practitioner by both Chambers & Partners UK and The Legal 500. In addition, he is an employment committee member in our IR Global network of international law firms and regularly advises overseas clients on UK employment and data protection matters. He is also a member of the Employment Lawyers Association. In his spare time, he helps his local primary school as a Governor.
